What is morphology?
Morphology is the study of word structure. Whereas individual phonemes do not have meaning, morphemes are the smallest unit in language that has meaning. For example, in the word "dogs", dog is the free morpheme (it can stand alone) and s is a bound morpheme since "s" by itself only denotes the plural.
How can I use morphology to teach ELL's in my classroom?
Explicitly teaching phonology and morphology to your students not only helps them learn current vocabulary, but has the long term benefit of teaching students how to decode new words. This helps them in reading for academic as well personal reasons.
Teach students words grouped by roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Pronunciation
Pronunciation is often overlooked, but it is a crucial component of language acquisition. A speaker is only comprehensible if they are understood by the listener. Explicitly teaching pronunciation and providing opportunities for speech are necessary
